Finnish Architecture: Anttinen Oiva, Verstas and JKMM
Tuomas Uusheimo
Two talks will be held at Rome's MAXXI, where a new generation of Finnish designers are introduced and the common values they share with Studio Aalto. The second event features prominent Finnish architecture firms, Anttinen Oiva Architects, Verstas Architects and JKMM Architects.
Architects Selina Anttinen, Jussi Palva and Asmo Jaaksi, will illustrate, exclusively and as a preview for Italy, a selection of some new projects built in Finland significant for their sustainable and human-scale approach. The aim is to present projects that share the goals of environmental sustainability, respect for human beings, technological innovation, architectural recovery and urban regeneration.
Selina Anttinen will present Katajanokan Laituri commercial building, which is located in the historical Helsinki harbour near the former headquarters of Stora Enso, designed by Alvar Aalto. The wood-framed building hosting office and commercial spaces, restaurants and a hotel will be completed by the end of 2024.
Jussi Palva will present the Lamminrahka Education Centre recently completed in the town of Kangasala. The primary school building can also be used during evenings and weekends for recreational purposes.
Asmo Jaaksi will present the Chappe contemporary art museum located in Tammisaari. The building fits harmoniously with its historic surroundings through a contemporary architectural language that combines natural materials and local craftsmanship.
The event is introduced and moderated by Antonello Alici, associate professor in history of architecture at Marche Polytechnic University. The event is curated by Arianna Callocchia. The talk coincides with the Aalto – Aino, Alvar, Elissa exhibition at MAXXI.
