SÄYNÄTSALO TOWN HALL WORKSHOP – MODERN MASTERPIECE IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY

Alvar Aalto Academy invites researchers and practitioners involved in the process of preservation, conservation, renovation or transformation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods, to participate in the Säynätsalo Town Hall Workshop – Modern Masterpiece in Contemporary Society. The event is arranged by the Alvar Aalto Academy in collaboration with the City of Jyväskylä.The theme of the workshop is this modern masterpiece of Alvar Aalto in our contemporary society. The aim of the workshop is to provide new multi-discipline information and understanding of the values and prerequisites for the use of the Säynätsalo Town Hall. The use of the building is currently in a state of flux, since the municipality of Säynätsalo merged with the City of Jyväskylä in 1993, which put an end to its original functions as a town hall.Further information, including full programme, and registration at

The working method of the workshop is framed around the process of preparing a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for the site. A CMP of
Paimio Sanatorium prepared on 2015 by Alvar Aalto Foundation, will be used as an example project.The workshop will consist of four themes: PUBLIC, HOUSING, COMMERCIAL and ENVIRONMENT. Under these main themes, the workshop will contribute to the process of identification of the values, and architectural and technical principles, as well as the questions concerning the preservation and conservation, relationship between the building and the landscape, and the problems encountered with the adaptive use of the site. The themes will be studied in four working groups, so that each participant of the workshop attends only one themed working group. The division into the groups will be done in the opening session of the workshop event. A fourth additional perspective: FUTURE, will be left to be implemented and monitored for the owner, the users and other stakeholders of the site.PREMISE | What do we have? The registration fee for the workshop is €120. The fee covers registration for the workshop, coffees served throughout 7–8 June 2017, lunch on 8 June, and VAT. A maximum of 30 participants will be selected in the order of registration. The registration is binding.
