New Architecture and Space Residency opens in Alajärvi
The Nelimarkka Museum's residency program, active since 1985, is launching a new Architecture and Space residency in the center of Alajärvi, at Villa Väinölä, designed by Alvar Aalto for his brother.
The new residency offers experiences of Alvar Aalto's architecture from different periods, starting with his early student works and spanning to the final phase when the architectural plans were completed by the architectural office of Alvar and Elissa Aalto. The residence offers an opportunity to delve deep into the processes of Aalto's architectural expression and form.
The Architecture and Space Residency provides a unique opportunity for those working in various fields of architecture and spatial issues to step away from their daily routines and find time and space to develop their own work.
The residency has been developed with the support of the Moisio Foundation. The museum thanks landscape architect Johanna Salmela and architect Helena Teräväinen for their contributions to the planning.
Working in the residence
The architecture and space residency is open to architects, landscape and interior architects at various stages of their careers, as well as urban planning and research professionals and students from Finland and abroad.
The annual application period ends on the last day of March. The residency duration is between 1 to 3 months. The first residency will begin in June 2025.
The residency’s pilot user, architect Jesse Kitinoja, lived and worked at Väinölä in November-December 2024. He praised the building's peaceful atmosphere, clean accommodation facilities, and the inspiring environment of Alajärvi and its surroundings. During his pilot stay, Kitinoja also participated in a workshop led by the museum’s residency artist.
