Guggenheim Helsinki: Game On!
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation has launched a two-stage architectural competition for a new museum building in Helsinki. The competition is organised in consultation with the City of Helsinki, the State of Finland, and the Finnish Association of Architects SAFA. The competition is managed by the London-based firm Malcolm Reading Consultants.Stage One is anonymous and the deadline for submissions is 10th September, 2014. All entries in Stage One, with special prominence given to the thirty highest-rated submissions, will be put on display on an online exhibition for public discussion. An eleven-member jury chaired by Mark Wigley, professor and Dean of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University, will announce the six finalists in November 2014, and The Guggenheim will announce the winner in June 2015. The City of Helsinki and the State of Finland are expected to deliberate on whether to proceed with the construction and development of the museum after the competition concludes.The distinguished jury members include two Finnish architectural experts: professor, architect SAFA Rainer Mahlamäki and architect SAFA Anssi Lassila. Other jurors are: Mikko Aho (Director of City Planning and architect, City of Helsinki), Jeanne Gang (Founder and Principal, Studio Gang Architects), Juan Herreros (Professor, and Founder, Estudio Herreros), Erkki Leppävuori (President and CEO, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland), Helena Säteri (Director General, Ministry of the Environment, Finland), Nancy Spector (Deputy Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator, Solomon R.
