Finnish Majamaja wins leading international design award

The Finnish sustainable holiday village of Majamaja, located in the Helsinki archipelago has won an internationally prestigious design award in London. Designed by Littow architects, the eco-friendly archipelago village in Laajasalo, Helsinki, produces both clean water and electricity on its own.

"We thought long and hard about entering this demanding competition. There are many applicants and the standard is high. We have ten years of development behind us," said architect Pekka Littow, who attended the awards ceremony in Hackney, London, on Tuesday.

"An innovator of ecological housing"

Claire Barrett, Director of the Dezeen Awards, is delighted with the Finnish success. Majamaja was awarded "Small project of the year".

"Majamaja's competition entry stood out for its ecological credentials. All our winners are of course of the highest architectural quality. The future of sustainable tourism and more broadly the field of leisure living needs green and tangible innovations like Majamaja," says Barrett.

"This award is a global recognition from a high level international jury and a significant recognition for us. It also gives a boost to the expansion of the archipelago village network, the next part of which we are currently developing in Vasikkasaari, not far from the centre of Helsinki," says Tuomas Autio, CEO of Majamaja, responsible for the Majamaja brand.

The internationally renowned design competition attracted more than 4000 participants from 82 countries this year. Majamaja is the first Finnish winner in the award's history.
