Theme
In an ontological sense, architecture exists in two ways: as experiences and as material constructions. On the one hand, we humans live in a physical world; and on the other hand, we live in a world of experiences. Architecture plays a role in both these spheres of existence. This does not mean, however, dualism but architecture as experiences and as material constructions are two interdependent aspects of the same phenomenon. The experiences are from the built environment and the built environment is developed on the basis of experienced and lived. Man and environment are engaged.Architecture appears differently in different cultures. Time, place, and general environmental and social factors affect both designing and experiencing of architecture. Today's architecture is different than architecture one hundred, or even just ten years ago. Architecture is changing all the time. The aim of the symposium is to discuss architecture and experience in today's cultural situation that is characterized, for example, by digitalization of our daily life, globalization and multiculturalism, climate change and pollution, as well as a fragmented community with plenty of different lifestyles and subcultures. We warmly welcome researchers and practitioners in architecture, urban design and planning, geography, social sciences, ecology and other fields related to spatial studies to discuss the issues of architecture and experience by taking account of e.g. the following points (any other points are welcome, too):Architecture
  • The relation between digital and traditional design processes and techniques
  • New and old building materials
  • Sustainable architecture (energy efficiency, recycling, cultural sustainability)
  • Global and local in contemporary architecture
  • Aesthetic dimension of contemporary architecture
Experience
  • Architecture and embodied existence
  • Architecture and senses
  • Lived space vs. virtual space
  • Urban experience
  • Atmosphere
Now
  • A critique of contemporary building techniques
  • Mold and indoor air quality problems
  • Discussion on compact urbanism
  • Urban production environments
  • Research by design
Final symposium tracks will be selected based on the accepted abstracts.
