One of the greatest masterpieces of Functionalism, Paimio Tuberculosis Sanatorium from 1933, awaits a new owner. Pro Paimio committee has drafted an appeal in order to preserve Alvar and Aino Aalto’s key work intact and protect the healing Modernism.Paimio Sanatorium ceased its operations as a hospital in 2015, after which parts of it have been used for rehabilitation of children and youth. The owner of the property, The Hospital District of Southwest Finland, has decided to sell all the buildings and extensive domains. The bidding was closed in August but now extended until the end of November.Finland’s National Board of Antiquities has listed the sanatorium as a culturally significant built environment, and it has been nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List. Nevertheless, the gesamtkunstwerk comprising the architecture, interiors and furniture especially designed for the sanatorium cannot be protected by law.Pro Paimio – Committee for Securing the Future of the Paimio Sanatorium has drafted an appeal, which will be handed over to the hospital district and the new owner. The signers indicate their support and emphasise that the new owner should find uses that respect the architecture of Alvar and Aino Aalto’s masterpiece.
