The 14th Alvar Aalto Symposium investigates new housing solutions for cities in change

The 14th International Alvar Aalto Symposium New housing solutions for cities in change will be held on 30−31 August, 2018 in Jyväskylä, Finland.

This year the symposium focuses on the current challenges and opportunities for future housing design and construction in urban areas. The theme will be explored from four specific perspectives: Cultural variables, Sharing, Adaptability and Emerging typologies. The topic emerges from a fact that urban housing and living are in a state of paradigmatic flux. For example, reducing energy consumption, increasing the density of community structures, and renovating the suburbs, as well as changes in the population demographic, all influence present housing design.

The programme consists of keynote lectures and the speakers represent a wide, multidisciplinary group of professionals and experts from the fields related to the symposium theme. These include among others: Selina Anttinen (Finland), Stephen Bates (UK), Damiano Cerrone (Italy), Édouard François (France), Mikkel Frost (Denmark), Ola Nylander (Sweden), Kristien Ring (Germany), Verena von Beckerath (Germany), Anne Kaestle (Switzerland), Peter Pichler (Italy), Jeremy Till (UK), Elina Alatalo (Finland), Jaakko Blomberg (Finland), Antti Lehto (Finland), Katja Maununaho (Finland), Elli Mosayebi (Switzerland), Sini Saarimaa (Finland) and Jyrki Tarpio (Finland).

The Alvar Aalto Symposium is an international forum for discussion on contemporary architecture. It is a triennial event, that brings professionals from around the world together to engage in current architectural topics. The aim is to stimulate critical discussion about the artistic, social and technical challenges faced by contemporary architecture. The event is organized by the Alvar Aalto Academy / Alvar Aalto Foundation this year together with the City of Jyväskylä, Academy of Finland plus numerous other partners.

The additional program of the symposium includes architectural excursions and an exhibition Alvar Aalto as a housing designer at the Alvar Aalto Museum in Jyväskylä, Finland.
